You can do this by using a repeating CSS background-image inside an absolutely positioned, absolutely sized div-block. The image should be a GIF-file consisting of minimun 2 pixel high, 2 pixel wide, 2 colors. One of the two colors is transparent, the other is the actual colorizer, and together they make for a chessboard pattern.
