Some people here will tell you to do the "OPEN COM" thing... well that usually works and you always have to open the com (for a terminal programme) or at least normally and if (big IF) you're wroking under a fossilized modem (ie a door in a BBS) then you have to do this "ECHO ATZ > COM1" so it goes directly to the comport and not through to the other side...
